At the age of 16, Jamie Lewis is being tipped as a future superstar of the sport.
Jamie has dominated junior gymnastics for the last 36 months, winning the Under 18 English Championships, Under 18 British Championships for the fourth consecutive year. Recently, Jamie has won the team gold at the Junior European Championships and was crowned the 2017 Youth European Olympic all-around Champion.
At the 2017 British Championships, Jamie performed amazingly under great pressure from Donell Osbourne and Joshua Nathan from the City of Birmingham. Jamie was crowned British Under 18 Champion scoring 80.10 and collected Gold on Floor and Pommels and Silver on Rings, Parallel Bars and High Bar. Jamie also qualified for 5 Masters Finals (the most of any British gymnast).
Jamie said in an interview after: “It feels amazing. When I first started I was a bit nervous but I got my first piece done which I was very happy with which relaxed me. I was really happy with my floor today, and I’m happy to come out on top. It was really close (the competition). We push each other quite a lot in training and at competitions but I just thought to myself, I’ve got to keep my head up, concentrate on what I’m doing and just focus.”
At the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival, Jamie Lewis was crowned European Youth Olympic men’s all-around champion after triumphing in style on day four of Gyor 2017. The 16-year-old from Woking dominated the final, going clean on all six pieces and eventually finished with a score of 82.200, with Russia’s Iurii Busse (80.100) and Nicolau Rossello of Spain (78.550) back in second and third respectively. Jamie also won the team Silver, and secured a second Gold in the rings final.
“This feels absolutely amazing” said Jamie "I’ve put so much hard work into my preparation and I’m so glad it’s paid off. I’ve gone clean in all six pieces and I couldn’t have asked for a better performance across the day. As soon as I did my rings I knew I was quite far ahead and then on pommel I was quite nervous but they’re my two best pieces and I knew I had to do well. This is the best medal I’ve won so far in my career. I won team gold at the Europeans but this all-around definitely tops everything. Words can’t describe how much I’m enjoying being out here and competing. The arena is special and it’s great to be meeting so many new people – it’s such an amazing experience.”
In the future, Jamie will target the Junior European’s in 2018 before switching to the senior competition, with his ultimate goal of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
